To appreciate photography one must disassociate it from other forms of art expression. Instead of holding a preconceived idea of art, founded upon painting (painting is cited because, in general, the word "art" seems to be somewhat synonymous with painting), it must be considered as a distinct medium of expression, and one must first of all realize that it is a medium capable of doing certain things which can be accomplished in no other way. No one condemns architecture because it does not look like a painting or a painting because it is not done in stone.

Of those who say that photography is too mechanical to produce works of art---and this category includes many otherwise competent art critics--it may be safely said that such an attitude denotes a lack of knowledge. The camera and the various apparatus and materials used in photography are, after all, merely tools, as are the paints, brushes, and chisels of other arts. And the result is bounded, not by the limitations of the tools, but by those of the man.

If the test of artistic worth is that an object be the means of aesthetic enjoyment, who will deny that through photography such objects may be and have been created?

40 Great Years and More!

The Columbia Foundation, in collaboration with The Artist’s Gallery, The Columbia Archives and LakeSide Coffee and Café, hosts “40 Great Years and More!”, an exhibit of works by local photographer Denee Barr and visual artist Alice Webb in the Foundation office at the American Cities Building, 10227 Wincopin Circle in Columbia, Maryland. The opening reception will be held Friday, June 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and is part of The Columbia Festival of the Arts’ “Artworks” at LakeFest. Denee Barr is the recipient of a 2003 Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award Grant for artistic excellence in photography. She studied film, painting, printmaking and papermaking at the University of Maryland and frequently combines these media to create photo-based works. Alice Webb works in watercolors, oils and etching and teaches watercolor painting in her Ellicott City home. Her artistry has been featured on the cover of the Baltimore Sun “Hometown Guides” for the local Maryland counties. “40 Great Years and More!” features the artists’ mixed media photographs, watercolors, etchings and giclee prints of landscapes throughout Howard County. Begun in conjunction with the Columbia Festival of the Arts’ LakeFest, the exhibit will be open from 10:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday for the remainder of the year. Founded in 1969, the Columbia Foundation has awarded nearly $9 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations delivering human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs. Money for the grant programs comes primarily from income generated by the Foundation’s endowment supported by over 200 funds established by Howard County businesses, families and individuals. on exhibit through June 22.

Landscape & Nature: A View From Maryland This exhibit is part of the cultural exchange between the State of Maryland and Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, which is celebrating their 25th year in the Sister States Program.

The exhibit was assembled by Project Curator, Sigrid Trumpy, and includes a broad range of talent and interpretations, from abstract to realism, of Maryland’s diverse urban and rural landscapes.

Many of the 44 artists represented have been award recipients of Maryland State Arts Council. Others were selected from the public art collections of University of Maryland University College in Adelphi, Maryland. All artwork was created over the past 25 years – a curatorial guideline to emphasize the 25th Anniversary of the Sister State program and compliment the original art exchange that occurred at that time.

The TREE OF LIFE or People Tree is the symbol of Columbia, Maryland. The People Tree sculpture celebrates the spirit of Columbia. This public artwork was created by Pierre du Fayet. He came to New York City in 1956 and worked as an industrial designer and commercial artist. Innovative Pierre du Fayet answered an ad to work on a project in Baltimore and joined visionary James Rouse and the group planning Columbia, Maryland in the early 1960's to create this wonderful sculpture.

I captured and printed the image seen above of last year's Columbia Triathlon. This year my son and I attended and cheered for racers from the sidelines. People really show up for this event....take that swim, bike, and run. In yesterday's 2007 Columbia Triathlon the youngest person in the race was 13 years old and the oldest person in the race was 71 years old.......a lot of fit people in this race and people looking to get fit participated. Even Adrian Fenty, the Mayor of Washington, DC and his father ventured out to Columbia, Maryland to race. And among the participants were past Olympic medalists and national champions in the sport of triathlon and other sports.

Denee Barr Art News and More

Denee Barr + mother, daughter, son, and aunt were on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC this past Saturday at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) "Building Community Through the Arts." We took the How to Make a Photogram and Create Digital Negatives workshop.

First, everybody started out in the CHAW traditional "wet" darkroom (19th/20th century) taking turns at the enlarger (traditional darkroom photo "printer") by placing their hands, eye glasses, and other objects on a piece of Ilford RC photo (light-sensitive with silver nitrate + gelatin) paper . Then we carried our prints to trays filled with photo chemistry........printed our images (witnessed prints evolving before our eyes), bathed our prints in running water, and set prints on drying racks......voila!.......we made photograms.

Second, everybody goes into the CHAW digital darkroom (21st century) and creates digital self-portraits on computers installed with a mini-camera. We each decide on the presentation of our digital portraits by working in Photoshop (computer software program where one can select tone - black and white or color, select effects - sepia....mosaic....solarized....traditional, select size and shape....elongated or truncated, etc. etc. etc. Then we hit the print button on our computers and out comes our self-portraits printed on photocopy paper....creating digital "paper negatives." Our instructor then takes our "paper negatives" to another printer installed with acetate sheets (clear, thin, plastic) and prints out our portraits so we can have "film-like" acetate negatives to take back into the CHAW "wet" darkroom....to make traditional black and white photos.

So we step back into the 19th/20th century and return to the CHAW traditional darkroom. Everybody takes turns placing a sheet of Ilford RC photo (light sensitive) paper below the enlarger head (traditional "wet" darkroom) with our "film-like" acetate negatives placed on top of our photo paper (contact printing process)....we expose our photo papers to the enlarger light for a few seconds....then we submerge our prints in developer, stop bath, and fixer (photo chemical baths)....finally we rinse our prints in trays of running H20....dry prints on racks....voila!.... we've made black and white silver gelatin prints....a process that I have been intimately aware of since stepping into darkroom photo classes for the first time (late 1980's) at the Howard County Center for the Arts in Ellicott City, Maryland.

Anyway, yesterday more photo mysteries of how photographers make prints were solved by my family....they rolled up their sleeves and engaged themselves in 19th/20th/21st century photography.

Everybody had fun....made photos and they didn't begrudge me too much because I made them take this workshop....www.chaw.org.

Maryland Hunt Cup #2 Glyndon, Maryland c Denee Barr 2001 All Rights Reserved
Good Evening,
I like this multi-layered photo and it took a lot of skill to capture the images in this silver gelatin print and "herculean" efforts to assemble the work in my darkroom. Earlier this morning, I published this image smaller but tonight I've decided to show the work larger so that you can see the winning horse better and see Cousin Barbara's hand in the far right corner holding a bottle of either fruit juice or iced tea.
Enjoy! Denee

Maryland Hunt Cup #2
Glyndon, Maryland
c Denee Barr 2001

Boo! I missed the Maryland Hunt Cup this year again. The Maryland Hunt Cup first debuted in 1894 when two rival fox hunts decided to see who had the best horses. This year the race was run on Saturday, April 28th. The Maryland Hunt Cup is the #1 steeplechase race in the U.S. I know that every spring in April is Maryland Hunt Cup time. I started attending this event with camera in tow in the late 1980's early 1990's. I loved seeing the horses jump over timber logs backdropped against the rolling green hills of Baltimore County. Some years I would go alone and other years I would be accompanied by my mother, my neighbor's kids and/or my cousin Barbara (30 years my senior). Cousin Barbara was familiar with horse racing and one year we decided to place a bet on one of the horses. We both decided that one horse looked especially chipper and ebullient so we place a very modest bet.....Cousin Barbara showed me how. We both wished that we had put more money down because the horse that we chose ended up winning 1st.....see photo above....that's the horse that won with a woman as jockey too! I captured this image back in the early 1990's. This silver gelatin print was printed (2001) the old fashioned way (Photoshop wasn't even a whisper back then) by sandwiching 3 negatives and praying that by working multiple exposures in the darkroom that I would get the right amount of imagery to come through on my photo fiber paper.

Next year, I hope to return to the Maryland Hunt Cup. I actually had a very good reason this year for not attending because on that day a very special event occurred in Howard County, Maryland. More on that story in a future blogging post.............Enjoy the Work...............Make Art..................Denee

Ansel Adams
American
1902 - 1984

Mr. Adams, can you remember the first photograph that you ever took?

"Well, that would be hard because the family had an old 3 1/2 by 3 1/2 Kodak Bullseye and we'd just take pictures. I think the first photograph I was conscious of really trying to make was a picture taken whilst I was sitting on a rotten stump near Camp Curry. The stump gave way and I descended, I clicked the shutter and in some miraculous way I got the picture. When the film was developed at the local photofinishers, he said: "You must have held the camera upside down when you did this one." I was wracking my brains to figure out how I did do it. He showed me the whole roll and I thought that it must have happened when I fell off the stump. That was in the Yosemite Mountains during 1916 and as I became more interested in the mountains, my natural impulse was to have a visual diary. The excitement of Yosemite became strong and filtered through me into some aesthetic experiences which probably were supported by similar experiences I was having in music study......"

page 317

Was there any art background in your family at all?

"No, not in the family."

page 318

Why did you study music instead of photography?

"I studied music when I was about eight or nine. I forget the exact date, but I was very young. So I'd worked with music years before I even thought of using the camera."

page 318

So in fact, you ended up being a self-taught photographer?

"That's all you could be then as there was no school. I learned some sort of bread-and-butter things. In the summer of 1917 I learned a lot about developing, picture washing, the 'nuts and bolts' as we call it."

page 319

You got involved at a fairly young age with the conservation movement?

"Oh, yes, there was a club founded in 1896, but I didn't really have any direct interest in that until I got to Yosemite. In 1917 I joined the Sierra Club and in 1918 and 1919 I was custodian of the club memorial. Conservation was growing all the time because then we used the word conservation with a specific meaning. I don't use it at all now because it has lost its original meaning. You can conserve everything from beans to oil you know. I use the term environment. That really is more to the point."

I had discovered a charming illustrated magazine in our attic which moved me very much; I felt its warmth and spontaneity and I decided that I wanted to express my own impressions in the same way."

How did you first become interested in photography?

"I think I must have been given a Brownie camera when I was twelve. But probably what did me more good than anything else was being with my mother's closest friend, who was blind. During the St Louis Exposition, I would go to the fair every other day and describe the exhibits to her. I think that taught me observation like nothing else could. I can see those exhibits now, just as if it was yesterday."

How did you get started in photography?

"Everybody asks me that question. I'm asked it at parties, everywhere. Nobody started me. I was self-motivated. But I did see something of Gertrude Kasebier - and that's all I'm going to tell you about what started me off."

Gertrude Kasebier
American
1852-1934

"One of the most difficult things to learn in painting is what to leave out. How to keep things simple enough."

"The same applies to photography. The value of composition cannot be over estimated; upon it depends the harmony and the sentiment."

"Instruments and mediums can be had for a price; originality, creative faculty, poetic feeling, can come from only one source, but they can be lost if they be not cherished...."

"The key to artistic photography is to work out your own thoughts, by yourselves. Imitation leads to disaster."

" New ideas are always antagonized. Do not mind that. If a thing is good it will survive."

William Christenberry
Hale County, Alabama
Born 1936

This past Tuesday, April 3rd, I had the pleasure of meeting Washington, DC based photographer William Christenberry in a lecture sponsored by the Maryland Institute College of Art, Graduate Studies Department in Baltimore.
Christenberry is also on faculty at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. I've already seen his wonderful art installation (July 1, 2006 - July 7, 2007) at the Smithsonian American Art Museum entitled Passing Time: The Art of William Christenberry. Don't miss seeing Christenberry's photographs, sculpture, building constructions, paintings and drawings.......what a treat!
William Christenberry's photos are also in the "Heart of DC" John A. Wilson Building Public Art Collection which is on permanent exhibition and is a must see when you are touring Washington, DC. My photos as you know are also in the Wilson Building Art Collection, 3rd floor east. After the lecture at the Maryland Institute College of Art, William Christenberry graciously autographed my Wilson Building Art Collection catalogue. His photo "Red Building in Forest" appears on page 49. And my Kent Island, Maryland photos appear on page 53.

John Paul Caponigro
Boston, Massachusetts
Born 1965

Yesterday afternoon and into the evening, I had a very enjoyable visit at the University of Maryland College Park (in the 1980's my own stomping grounds by the way, originally as an engineering student then I transferred to the department of radio, television, film and video finally went back in the 1990's to study printmaking and papermaking in the art department). I was there to attend a digital printing seminar and artist lecture by renowned visual artist/digital photographer "whiz kid" John Paul Caponigro. The American Society of Media Photographers DC Chapter (ASMP DC) sponsored this event. What I like about John Paul Caponigro who produces exquisite digital imagery of places like Antartica (South Pole) is that he is dedicated to fostering the growth of creativity in other artists through his lectures and workshops around the country. I sat there during his lecture inspired like the other audience attendees. Thank you John!

Lorna Simpson
Brooklyn, New York
Born 1960

Straight out of Brooklyn, Lorna Simpson will be "in the house" today at the University of Maryland College Park. The UMCP Art Department is hosting a visit and talk by Lorna Simpson as part of their Spring 2007 Visiting Artist Lecture Series, an ongoing and active program that engages some of the contemporary art world's brightest thinkers through public lecture and interaction. Be there ......... 5pm, Wednesday, April 11th Room 2309 Art/Sociology Building and hear directly from this multi-talented photographer, filmmaker, and videographer who currently has an art installation Lorna Simpson at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City (March 1 - May 6, 2007). For those of you who are New York City based The Whitney Museum of American Art has a series of outstanding photo lectures lined up from April 14th-April 26th. I'd go check those "cutting edge" photo art talks if I were you while you are checking out Lorna Simpson's artwork. Send me your regards and let me know what I'll be missing.........

Calling all photography enthusiasts and art aficionados get out and enjoy some great photo art!
