"The invention of photography depended on the confluence of three streams of thought. Two of these tributary sources had long histories as scientific disciplines called optics and chemistry; the third was the poetic idea that it might be possible to snatch from the very air a picture formed by the forces of nature."

THE PORTFOLIOS
OF ANSEL ADAMS
Introduction by John Szarkowski
LITTLE, BROWN AND COMPANY
BULLFINCH PRESS
BOSTON TORONTO LONDON
1977
When I started to print my own photos back in the late 1980's , The Complete Portfolios of Ansel Adams was my guide to how to print like a master photographer but like anything in art once you've learned the basics you can start "breaking the rules"......... that's how you develop your own inner voice and vision.
So today go out on a limb..............create the foundation for your personal creative vision.

First Roses of Summer, Columbia, Maryland
c Denee Barr 2003 All Rights Reserved
In 2003, I won a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award Grant for artistic excellence in photography. In 2004, the MSAC chose to honor the 2003 photography grant winners with an exhibition entitled Photography X 8 at the James Backus Gallery (see photo above). I chose to exhibit three unique photos from my rose series featuring roses from my summer garden and dried red roses from a bouquet that were presented to my mother for Mother's Day a few years prior. Eventually this series was expanded into a solo exhibition entitled Variation on Dried Red Roses by Denee Barr and that installation debuted in 2005 at the Columbia Art Center in Columbia, Maryland.

"Being an artist, I had an artist's instincts.
Why, you have an advantage over the average photographer.
You can see the picture before it's taken;
then it's up to you to get the camera to see it."

Denee Barr Art News and More
I traveled through England visiting British friends who were more than willing to help me explore the English countryside. The farmhouse image was captured by me (1992) in the small village where I stayed for most of my trip. My camera and I became regulars in the neighborhood and I enjoyed many walks with my tripod on moist ground in my "wellies" the British term for boots. Currently, up for silent auction online in Celebration of the Arts in Howard County, Maryland 2007 is "Farmhouse, Oxfordshire, England" c Denee Barr 1997 (pictured above) and two other photos in this series. All three mixed media photos (gelatin silver print and mixed media with paper pulp) are for sale to help support the Howard County Arts Council & The Jim Rouse Theatre for the Performing Arts. Place your bids on the Howard County Arts Council website http://www.hocoarts.org and if you are in town purchase a ticket to attend the Celebration of the Arts Gala and Rising Star Competition ("American Idol Style") in Columbia, Maryland on Saturday, April 21st from 6-10pm with entertainment, food, Howie Awards, Silent Auction. By the way, a past winner of the Rising Star Competition is former Columbia, Maryland resident now New York City based Alicia Graf who went on to join Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Take your place among the stars at the Celebration of the Arts in Howard County.................... Good Cheer, Denee
