TICKETS ON SALE FOR HOWARD COUNTY’S SIGNATURE GALA EVENT11th Annual Celebration of the Arts in Howard County!
Ellicott City, MD –Tickets are selling fast for one of Howard County’s signature events, the Celebration of the Arts in Howard County to be held on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at The Jim Rouse Theatre, Wilde Lake High School, Columbia. Tickets can be purchased on the Howard County Arts Council’s website at www.hocoarts.org, by phone at 410-313-ARTS (2787), or in person at the Howard County Center for the Arts, 8510 High Ridge Road, Ellicott City, MD 21043. Tickets are $50.00 for balcony seating and $75 for orchestra seating. Advance purchase is recommended.

As well as the Rising Star Competition, which begins in the Jim Rouse Theatre (JRT) at 8pm, the evening’s events include a host of other activities, both on the Main Stage of the JRT and in the Main Street reception area from 6-8pm. The Main Street entertainers are Rae Bernard and Friends, (presenting by Harmony of the Sol), The Damon Foreman Music Academy Trio, pianist Patricia Hammer, the Indian dance group Abinaya Natya Sala, The Columbia Orchestra String Quartet and the Orchestra’s Elaine Newhall, Tanya Hoegh-Allan of Columbia Concert Band, flute duet Pipin’ Hot, members of The Columbia Jazz Band and dancers from Arthur Murray. Also on the Celebration’s Main Street are a silent auction of over 100 works of art by local artists and culinary delights from area restaurants and caterers. Over 50 vendors have generously donated to the Celebration Raffle. Raffle tickets are on sale now, $5 per ticket or 5 for $20.

Performances on the main stage of the JRT begin at 8pm with Celebration host, Richard W. Story, CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority. This year’s contenders for the Rising Star award are: Courtney Bell (monologue), Risa Binder (vocal), Colleen Daly (opera), Jorge Espinoza (cello), Alexander Francis (piano), Matt Hemerlein (guitar), Rebecca King (classical ballet), Keesun Kwon (opera), Aimee Velle (modern dance), and Chrissy Wallace (piccolo). Howie Award recipients are Jason Love for Outstanding Artist, Deborah Bourke for Outstanding Art Educator and Corporate Office Properties (COPT) for Outstanding Business Supporter of the Arts. Guest performers are 2006 Rising Star Award Winner, Korey Jackson, accompanied by pianist Patricia Hammer, and vocalist Lynn Sharp Spears. The 2008 Howard County Arts Council’s Arts Scholarship Recipients, Howie Awards, Rising Star $1,000, $2,500 and $5,000 award winners and Raffle winners will all be announced onstage.

Barbara K. Lawson, President and CEO of The Columbia Foundation, serves as Honorary Chair of this year’s gala. Any tickets remaining on the day of the event will be sold from 1pm at the box office of The Jim Rouse Theatre.
