Heart of DC: The John A. Wilson Building City Hall Public Art Collection in Washington, DC
City Hall Art Collection Tour
Beginning at 12 p.m. on Wednesday March 26, Sondra N. Arkin will be leading a guided tour through the City Hall Art Collection on permanent display on floors G-5 in the Wilson Building. This tour will focus on the women in the collection in honor of Women's History Month -- and will also be the first introduction to the 28 newest pieces in the collection.
The City Hall Art Collection, Heart of the City, has been assembled over the past three years under the sponsorship of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. It is the richest and largest permanent exhibition of the work of 100 + local artists in the city, featuring a broad range of work, from internationally known artists to work by many of the artists of significance working in our area now. All styles and media are included. The collection truly provides a window into the scope of creative talent and energy that DC offers today.
This is a unique chance to enjoy the collection along with the curator and to share your responses. Tours are given bi-monthly by either the curator or one of the artists.

Meet at the receptionist's desk on the first floor near the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance - the building is located at 1350 Pennsylvania Ave NW. ID is required to enter the building.

Lida Moser Retrospective Exhibition Opens Today

Opening on March 14, 2008 and through April 5, 2008, the Fraser Gallery in Bethesda will be hosting their second solo exhibition of legendary American photographer Lida Moser, who now lives in retirement in nearby Rockville, Maryland.
This almost 90-year-old photographer is not only one of the most respected American photographers of the 20th century, but also a pioneer in the field of photojournalism. Her photography has been in the middle of a revival and rediscovery of vintage photojournalism, and has sold as high as $4,000 at Christie's auctions and continues to be collected by both museums and private collectors worldwide. In a career spanning over 60 years, Moser has produced a body of works consisting of thousands of photographs and photographic assemblages that defy categorization and genre or label assignment.
Over the last 60 years, her work has encompassed photojournalism, portraiture, theatre, special effects, book covers, record covers, fashion and architectural photography. Her work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the National Portrait Gallery, London, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC and Les Archives Nationales du Quebec in Canada.
This exhibition will include both vintage and lifetime prints, many of which are one of a kind.
Additionally, Canadian television recently finished filming a documentary about her life; the second in the last few years, and Moser’s work is now in the collection of many museums worldwide.
Lida was a well-known figure in the New York art scene of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, and a portrait of Lida Moser by American painter Alice Neel hangs in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. Neel painted a total of four Moser portraits over her lifetime, and one of them was included in the National Museum of Women in the Arts' "Alice Neel's Women" exhibition.
Among her body of works there are also loads of photographs of well-known artists and musicians that either hung around Lida's apartment in NYC or who were part of her circle of friends.
Lida Moser's photographic career started as a student and studio assistant in 1947 in Berenice Abbott's studio in New York City, where she became an active member of the New York Photo League. She then worked for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Look and many other magazines throughout the next few decades, and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.
In 1950 Vogue, and (and subsequently Look magazine) assigned Lida Moser to carry out an illustrated report on Canada, from one ocean to another. When she arrived at the Windsor station in Montreal, in June of that same year, she met by chance, Paul Gouin, then a Cultural Advisor to Duplessis government. This chance meeting led Moser to change her all-Canada assignment for one centered around Quebec.
Armed with her camera and guided by the research done by the Abbot Felix-Antoine Savard, the folklorist Luc Lacourcière and accompanied by Paul Gouin, Lida Moser then discovers and photographs a traditional Quebec, which was still little touched by modern civilization and the coming urbanization of the region.
Decades later, a major exhibition of those photographs at the McCord Museum of Canadian History became the museum’s most popular exhibit ever.
She has also authored and been part of many books and publications on and about photography. She also wrote a series of "Camera View" articles on photography for The New York Times between 1974-81.
Her work has been exhibited in many museums worldwide and is in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, the National Archives, Ottawa, the National Galleries of Scotland, National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC, the Library of Congress, Les Archives Nationales du Quebec, Corcoran Gallery, Phillips Collection and many others.
Moser was an active member of the Photo League and the New York School.
The Photo League was the seminal birth of American documentary photography. It was a group that was at times at school, an association and even a social club. Disbanded in 1951, the League promoted photojournalism with an aesthetic consciousness that reaches street photography to this day.
An opening reception for Ms. Moser will be held on Friday, March 14, 2007 from 6-9PM as part of the Bethesda Art Walk. The reception is free and open to the public.

Everybody Loves a Great Story...............
Title: The Hunt
Artist: Kay Klotzbach
My dog paintings are about the quiet, mysterious and introspective part of me. Although the dog is the subject, the content of the work goes much deeper. Loneliness, taking a journey, dream-like states, longing, devotion, searching, abandonment and loss are touched on in these paintings. I am interested in showing and sharing images that are from unusual spatial vantage points and at times so real that they become surreal.
What do dogs dream about, what is that state that humans experience before sleep and waking up and are there parallels between these two worlds? How and why do dogs love us so completely? Where will my dog lead me today and where will my painting lead me? These questions are intertwined with my subject.
Jewel my first dog opened up another world for me as a person and an artist. Connecting with her took me to a different place where time stood still. Unfortunately, I could not stop time for her. She was diagnosed with lymphoma in July 2007 and the days that I share with her are all the more precious.

On January 11, 2008, two new exhibits opened at the Howard County Center for the Arts. Stories to Tell is a narrative show featuring artists Beth Blake, Jason Godeke, Linda Adele Goodine, Li Hu, Kay Klotzbach and Nelson Reinhart. In Gallery II, Visual Constructions features abstract artwork by Robert Sibbison and Peter Whitting. Both exhibits are on display until February 22, 2008.
A free, public reception will be held on Friday, January 18, 2007 from 6-8PM (Snow date: January 25, 2008). Meet the artists, enjoy live music and light refreshments.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10AM-8PM; Saturday 10AM-4PM; and Sunday 12-4PM.

On January 11, 2008, two new exhibits opened at the Howard County Center for the Arts. Stories to Tell is a narrative show featuring artists Beth Blake, Jason Godeke, Linda Adele Goodine, Li Hu, Kay Klotzbach and Nelson Reinhart. In Gallery II, Visual Constructions features abstract artwork by Robert Sibbison and Peter Whitting. Both exhibits are on display until February 22, 2008.
A free, public reception will be held on Friday, January 18, 2007 from 6-8PM (Snow date: January 25, 2008). Meet the artists, enjoy live music and light refreshments.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10AM-8PM; Saturday 10AM-4PM; and Sunday 12-4PM.

Biography
Deb Willis has an affiliated appointment with the College of Arts and Sciences, Africana Studies. She was a 2005 Guggenheim Fellow and Fletcher Fellow, and a 2000 MacArthur Fellow, as well as the 1996 recipient of the Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation award. She has pursued a dual professional career as an art photographer and as one of the nation's leading historians of African American photography and curator of African American culture. I work in the medium of photography and whether I translate my work via traditional darkroom or digital methods I have skill in the visual dynamic via any method conceived, captured and presented by me. Dark room chemistry vs. electronic chips their just tools. Makes no difference to me what tools I have available to work with for I decide the evolution of my artwork just like artists working in other mediums.

The Maryland-Kanagawa, Japan Prefecture Sister State Art Exhibit is now on display at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center through Dec. 21. The dynamic, contemporary art exhibit features works by 43 Maryland artists and is titled "Landscape and Nature: A View From Maryland.” This touring exhibition is part of the cultural exchange program between Maryland and Kanagawa, Japan.
Reception: Monday, December 17th from 5-7:30pm

It’s All About Art: Scholars Speak”
It’s All About Art, a multi-year series, examines the joining lines of visual arts, performing arts, and arts and letters. The 2007-2008 program season, “Scholars Speak,” features art scholars who give voice to the obvious, and not so obvious relationships that influence and inspire these creative processes. Exhibitions, book signings, and ‘artist salon talks’ enrich the colorful dialogue. The season kicks off with a weekend celebration of filmmakers and their films! MAS is delighted to expand its collaborations to include The Phillips Collection, with a co-sponsored event closing the 2007 – 2008 season.

MAS SEASON KICKOFF: Moving “Pictures” – A Celebration of Film!
October 19, 6-8 p.m. – reception honoring filmmakers Richard Willis and Lerone Wilson at Parish Gallery (hosted by MAS and Parish Gallery)
Cost: FREE and open to the public
October 20, 2-5 p.m. – screening and salon talk with filmmakers at Busboys and Poets
2:00 p.m. Colored Frames
Written and Produced by Lerone Wilson, a documentary about African American Artists, with interviews of artists, scholars and collectors
3:05 p.m. Take Your Bags
Written and Produced by Camille Billops and James V. Hatch, a film about Slavery and the Middle Passage.
3:20 p.m. Prison Body, Freedom Soul
Written and Produced by Richard Willis, a documentary about an innocent man imprisoned for 44 years.
Cost: Suggested Contribution $10/film,
$25 package (all three films)
Proceeds will support filmmakers production and distribution costs.

Deborah Willis is Professor of Photography and Imaging at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. EXHIBITION: Ancestral Vessels
Painter, Printmaker, and Ceramic Sculptor Kwabena Ampofo-Anti has roots in Ghana, West Africa, his birthplace; Washington, DC, where he studied art at Howard University; and Virginia, where he teaches art at Hampton University. These roots feed a prolific spirit that unfolds through “vessels” of clay, paper and canvas. This exhibition highlights clay sculptures and two dimensional works by Ampofo.

Two leading scholars on African American art speak – Dr. Turner, University Professor at the UVA and curator of two major national traveling exhibitions on Jacob Lawrence, Over the Line: The Art and Life of Jacob Lawrence (2001-03) and The Migration Series (1993-1995) for The Philips Museum and Dr. King-Hammond, Dean of Graduate Studies and Professor of Art History, at the Maryland Institute College of Art and Chair of the Board of The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture. One scholar asks, the other responds. Both reflect on artists of the 20th century and look ahead to artists in the new millennia.

In case you've never participated in Collector's Choice, as patron or donating artist, here's how it works. Member artists donate their treasured art works, which can be worth as much as $2000. These are featured in a preview at the Circle Gallery during the week before the event (October 19 through the 26th) to showcase the artwork and give ticket holders an opportunity to rank their choices and to tempt new collectors.
Each $160 ticket gives the ticket bearer and a guest an evening featuring a sumptuous buffet of fine food and drink donated by area chefs and restaurants, and best of all, the chance to take home your favorite artwork to add to your collection. After a chance to review and rank the artwork and enjoy the buffet-bar, the raffle begins.
It's a fast-paced evening as ticket numbers are randomly drawn and ticket holders claim their art choice. Those with numbers drawn first have the widest selection to choose from. As the number of available artworks shrinks, collector and artist alike get revved up, wondering who will be chosen next. It's an evening of fun and chance!

In case you've never participated in Collector's Choice, as patron or donating artist, here's how it works. Member artists donate their treasured art works, which can be worth as much as $2000. These are featured in a preview at the Circle Gallery during the week before the event (October 19 through the 26th) to showcase the artwork and give ticket holders an opportunity to rank their choices and to tempt new collectors.
Each $160 ticket gives the ticket bearer and a guest an evening featuring a sumptuous buffet of fine food and drink donated by area chefs and restaurants, and best of all, the chance to take home your favorite artwork to add to your collection. After a chance to review and rank the artwork and enjoy the buffet-bar, the raffle begins.

“Mirror Me: Self-Portraits by Women,” an exhibition of works by 21 women artists, offers a multi-dimensional look into the art of portraying “self” through a variety of media and techniques. Curated by Community College of Baltimore County art instructor and Howard County Center for the Arts (www.hocoarts.org) resident studio artist Diana Marta, the exhibition will be on display in the Q Building Gallery at CCBC Catonsville, October 8-30, 2007, 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and features multi-faceted works by well-known artists Joyce J. Scott, Mary K. Cloonan, Oletha DeVane, Chevelle Makeba Moore Jones, Spoon Popkin, Nicole Buckingham, Connie Imboden, Joan M.E. Columbia Archives Explores James Rouse Vision for Columbia, Maryland with Open House Event on Wednesday, October 10th

A one-hour video featuring people who knew Columbia founder James Rouse and a lecture by the producer of a television program on Baltimore's Inner Harbor are featured events for an Oct. 10 open house at the Columbia Archives. The program called "Balancing the Value of the Past While Providing a Vision for the Future" will feature four events that provide information about the history of Columbia and community planning in general.
The first event "Looking Back at Town Center Planning" is a presentation about ways people can preserve the past and continue to create a vision for Columbia's future. That event runs from noon until 1 p.m.
The second event "Talking About Jim Rouse" is an hour-long screening of a newly remastered Columbia Matters documentary featuring interviews of people who knew Rouse well. The program
includes an interview with famed architect Frank Gehry. The screening runs from 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
The third event "Archives on Our Lives" will feature a lecture by Kim Skeen, who is the producer of a Public Broadcast Service documentary called "Global Harbors" about Baltimore's Inner Harbor that Rouse designed. The documentary discusses the influence the Inner Harbor has had on harbors throughout the world. The event that runs from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The final program of the day "Walking Tour of Town Center" will feature a walking tour of Town Center that focuses on ways to balance historic preservation and development. The tour will be held from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
The Columbia Archives is located on the ground floor of the American City Building, 10227 Wincopin Circle, Columbia, Maryland 21044 in Town Center near Lake Kittamaquandi.

Ms. Hirshfield mesmorized the audience with readings from her award winning books including selections from her current 2006 publication After Jane Hirshfield Poems. And the children in attendance were treated to a nature walk around the Howard County Conservancy and they learned how to write Haiku, a form of Japanese poetry led by talented Columbia, Maryland writer Tim Singleton.

Yesterday I took my family to the The Howard County Conservancy Fall Festival at Mount Pleasant Farm and we had a simply wonderful afternoon. What a delightful retreat!
Some of the activities that we enjoyed were making old-time crafts, blacksmithing, archeology dig, weaving, spinning, art show, and quiltmaking.
We were also present for the rededication and unveiling of the Montjoy Barn which is the last standing wheat barn in Maryland dating back to 1798. We were told that John Quincy Adams was President and Benjamin Banneker was surveying the land in Washington, DC when this barn was a working barn......oh my to be in the presence of such an historical structure. And, the barn is simply exquisite, masterful to behold.
Near the end of the festival, I purchased a very unique plant called "Lamb's Ear". I couldn't resist the purchase because the leaves actually feel like soft sheep wool. When I brought the plant home we talked about whether I should place the plant outside but then someone mentioned about the plant being a tasty meal for some of the rabbits that like to hop through our yard so I have decided to place the plant in a very large pot on our enclosed sun deck for now.

The Howard County Conservancy at Mount Pleasant Farm
The Howard County Conservancy is Howard County’s largest land trust, founded by a group of local citizens in 1990 to help preserve the natural environment, agricultural farmland, and unique historic sites in Howard County. Headquartered at Mt. Pleasant Farm in Woodstock, Maryland, a 232-acre farm that is 300 years old, the Conservancy offers dozens of year-round educational programs for adults and children, hosts special events, and provides numerous volunteer opportunities, in addition to providing Howard County residents with information about land conservation. The Conservancy protects land by acquiring it through gift or by obtaining a conservation easement.
In 2005, with funding from the Gudelsky Family Foundation, the State of Maryland, and Howard County, the Conservancy built the Gudelsky Environmental Education Center at Mt. Pleasant. The Gudelsky Center is Howard County’s only nature center. Our educational programs are run out of the Gudelsky Center and it houses classrooms, meeting rooms, gallery space, exhibits and a gift shop.
The Conservancy, the Gudelsky Environmental Education Center and Gift Shop are open to the public every Friday and Saturday from 9am – 4pm. Visitors can tour the center and pick up brochures and other information about the Conservancy’s native landscaping, the “green” building elements in the Center, and upcoming events. Trail maps and information about Mt. Pleasant history are available as well. Visitors can bring a picnic lunch, hike miles of maintained trails and enjoy the beautiful gardens! Dogs must be on leashes.

The festival is being launched in commemoration of NMWA’s 20 years of dedication to celebrating the highest creative achievements of women, in honor of this history and to highlight exceptional and exciting new film and media works by women.
