Edda Jakab described in 2006, her search “for the situation that speaks of the fleeting moment, and that, at the same time, suggests the sense of another time. Space that speaks of absence and – at the same time- presence; the kind that’s less seen than felt.” Edda Jakab

Edda Jakab was planning this exhibit when she passed away on March 2, 2007, after a year-long illness with brain cancer. The Howard County Arts Council gratefully acknowledges the generosity of Dr. George Jakab and family for fulfilling Edda’s plan to make this exhibit a possibility.

“My work is grounded in memory – in particular, of place and where the natural and man-made worlds intersect. The process of remembering suggests an ordering of nature through which the underlying geometry of these places emerges. In a similar way, the making of the images becomes a parallel for this experience of remembering. The initial drawings of charcoal on canvas are specific, and the washes of transparent color reflect the immediacy of the experience. Time and distance, however, cause the particulars of memory to fade, leaving impressions of light, shape, color and space. The painting develops in a parallel way. Images and colors are literally sanded away, and are then redrawn with new layers and washes of color added – a process that reflects more memory than immediate experience. His additive and subtractive process is repeated until the imagery reaches a new equilibrium – one that fixes itself in my memory and takes on an existence that both reflects and re-shapes the original visual experience.” Michael Farrell

So my son and I are just back from the RYKA Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon 2007 at Centennial Lake Park in Ellicott City, Maryland. This year we hovered around the finish line and I must say everyone "breaking that tape" had a big smile on their face and look so relaxed after the 6:45 am start.

With the .62 mile swim---- 7.5 mile bike ----3.4 mile run no matter the shape, size, age, skill of the racers.....we loved hearing those sweet sweet words uttered by the finish-line race attendants as the participants crossed the line "Congratulations You're an Iron Girl Now!"

I was inspired myself just viewing from the sidelines!!!

One day I happened to notice the sign off of the Baltimore/Washington Parkway for the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens www.nps.gov/kepa while driving down the road and so on one hot, steamy July 1995 day in Washington, DC I decided to explore this inner city tropical paradise. My mother and my daughter who was a toddler at the time were with me on this photo shoot.

Celebrate 25 years of the Sister State relationship between Maryland and the Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan with an opening art reception and exhibit featuring the works of 44 Maryland artists. View paintings, drawings, and photographs of suburban environments, rural country activities, edgy cityscapes, and nautical scenes, inspired by Maryland landscapes. This event is FREE and open to the public. This exquisite exhibition will eventually tour to the Kanagawa Earth Plaza for Global Citizenship.

To appreciate photography one must disassociate it from other forms of art expression. Instead of holding a preconceived idea of art, founded upon painting (painting is cited because, in general, the word "art" seems to be somewhat synonymous with painting), it must be considered as a distinct medium of expression, and one must first of all realize that it is a medium capable of doing certain things which can be accomplished in no other way. No one condemns architecture because it does not look like a painting or a painting because it is not done in stone.

Of those who say that photography is too mechanical to produce works of art---and this category includes many otherwise competent art critics--it may be safely said that such an attitude denotes a lack of knowledge. The camera and the various apparatus and materials used in photography are, after all, merely tools, as are the paints, brushes, and chisels of other arts. And the result is bounded, not by the limitations of the tools, but by those of the man.

If the test of artistic worth is that an object be the means of aesthetic enjoyment, who will deny that through photography such objects may be and have been created?

40 Great Years and More!

The Columbia Foundation, in collaboration with The Artist’s Gallery, The Columbia Archives and LakeSide Coffee and Café, hosts “40 Great Years and More!”, an exhibit of works by local photographer Denee Barr and visual artist Alice Webb in the Foundation office at the American Cities Building, 10227 Wincopin Circle in Columbia, Maryland. The opening reception will be held Friday, June 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and is part of The Columbia Festival of the Arts’ “Artworks” at LakeFest. Denee Barr is the recipient of a 2003 Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award Grant for artistic excellence in photography. She studied film, painting, printmaking and papermaking at the University of Maryland and frequently combines these media to create photo-based works. Alice Webb works in watercolors, oils and etching and teaches watercolor painting in her Ellicott City home. Her artistry has been featured on the cover of the Baltimore Sun “Hometown Guides” for the local Maryland counties. “40 Great Years and More!” features the artists’ mixed media photographs, watercolors, etchings and giclee prints of landscapes throughout Howard County. Begun in conjunction with the Columbia Festival of the Arts’ LakeFest, the exhibit will be open from 10:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday for the remainder of the year. Founded in 1969, the Columbia Foundation has awarded nearly $9 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations delivering human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs. Money for the grant programs comes primarily from income generated by the Foundation’s endowment supported by over 200 funds established by Howard County businesses, families and individuals. JAMES BACKAS GALLERY: Landscape & Nature: A View From Maryland

on exhibit through June 22.

Landscape & Nature: A View From Maryland This exhibit is part of the cultural exchange between the State of Maryland and Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, which is celebrating their 25th year in the Sister States Program.

The exhibit was assembled by Project Curator, Sigrid Trumpy, and includes a broad range of talent and interpretations, from abstract to realism, of Maryland’s diverse urban and rural landscapes.

Many of the 44 artists represented have been award recipients of Maryland State Arts Council. Others were selected from the public art collections of University of Maryland University College in Adelphi, Maryland. All artwork was created over the past 25 years – a curatorial guideline to emphasize the 25th Anniversary of the Sister State program and compliment the original art exchange that occurred at that time.

Artists of the Upper Shore meet the last Tuesday of the month at 9:30 am at the B&B Restaurant in Chester, to network, socialize, support and advocate for the arts. Artists of all medium are invited. Guest: Denee Barr, award winning photographer/artist, will stress how to succeed in your profession.


Yesterday, I enjoyed presenting my photo-based artwork and talking to artist members of Art East Group based in Kent Island on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

The TREE OF LIFE or People Tree is the symbol of Columbia, Maryland. The People Tree sculpture celebrates the spirit of Columbia. This public artwork was created by Pierre du Fayet. He came to New York City in 1956 and worked as an industrial designer and commercial artist. Innovative Pierre du Fayet answered an ad to work on a project in Baltimore and joined visionary James Rouse and the group planning Columbia, Maryland in the early 1960's to create this wonderful sculpture.

I captured and printed the image seen above of last year's Columbia Triathlon. This year my son and I attended and cheered for racers from the sidelines. People really show up for this event....take that swim, bike, and run. In yesterday's 2007 Columbia Triathlon the youngest person in the race was 13 years old and the oldest person in the race was 71 years old.......a lot of fit people in this race and people looking to get fit participated. Even Adrian Fenty, the Mayor of Washington, DC and his father ventured out to Columbia, Maryland to race. And among the participants were past Olympic medalists and national champions in the sport of triathlon and other sports.
