The Mesopotamia/Marriaqua Valley, St. Vincent and the Grenadines West Indies
This vast expanse of land is so luxuriant and evergreen with virtually every tropical crop growing in the rich fertile soils of St. Vincent. The Valley, viewed from a specific location on the island, offers a spectacular panoramic view of what is often referred as the “islands breadbasket” containing plots of bananas, nutmeg, cocoa, breadfruit, coconut and a multitude of root crops. The grand Bonhomme Mountain (318 ft, 970 metres) dominates the ridges that rises around the valley and a number of streams and rivers come together to flow over the rocks of the Yambou Gorge; in the small town of Mesopotamia (“Mespo”), before entering the sea on the east coast of the island. www.discoversvg.com

Keep in mind you can always see my photographs in the Heart of DC: John A. Wilson Building City Hall Public Permanent Art Collection, 3rd floor east next to the Office of Planning and Economic Development.


The collection is open to the public during the normal business hours: Monday-Friday 9 am-5 pm. Free, guided tours of the exhibition are offered bimonthly. For more information, contact Zoma Wallace, Art Bank Coordinator or (202) 724-5613.




The largest display of artwork from the Art Bank is the City Hall Art Collection at the John A. Wilson Building in downtown DC entitled The HeArt of DC. In 2006 the DC Creates Public Art Program acquired 153 works of art representing 100 Metropolitan area artists for the inaugural phase of the City Hall Art Collection. In 2008, the program made ... See Moreanother acquisition bringing the number of pieces to over 200. The collection showcases the extent and depth of our local visual arts talent. Over 10 percent of the artists were born in the District, and most have lived here for over 20 years. In addition to supporting the work of living artists through art purchases, we were able to enhance the collection with the work of nationally recognized DC artists including Gene Davis and Alma Thomas. By presenting art outside traditional venues of museums and galleries, the City Hall Art Collection benefits the community and its visitors by increasing access to art, extending our cultural institutions’ reach, and providing artists with opportunities to expand their artistic practice and audience. Installed in the John A. Wilson Building, the collection is open to the public.

A COLLECTING AFFAIR III: THE ART OF COLLECTING PHOTOGRAPHY
The Collectors photography exhibition is being held as part of the Columbia Festival of the Arts. The exhibit runs June 10-27, 2010 here in Columbia Art Center Galleries. There will be five women photographers featured in the show (Denee Barr is one of the exhibiting photographers with several photo-based artworks in this exhibit!). The show is the 3rd installment of the Collecting Affair series which is presented each June as part of Columbia Festival of the Arts and designed to promote art collecting in the community.

The reception and gallery talk will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 5:30-8pm in Columbia Art Center Galleries.


MISSION STATEMENT
The Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to join with local arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings.

OVERVIEW
The Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more! The Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division. Under Columbia Association, the Art Center is 19 years old. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College.

LOCATION
The Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center (next to Stonehouse Community Center) just minutes from Route 175 and Tamar Drive in Columbia, Maryland.

DIRECTIONS
From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 for several miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile. Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center parking lot. Art Center is located in the courtyard behind the Safeway entrance (look for large round window).
From I-95, take the MD 100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Take the Snowden River exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit onto Snowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. Park in the Long Reach Village Center lot on left. We had over 200 joyful people young and old in attendance. The program was clever, smart, entertainining, historical, cultural, enlightening, engaging, impromptu, planned, ad lib, all that and more============.
What a celebration!

Note:

The Howard County Center of African American Center museum is located at 5434 Vantage Point Road in Columbia, Maryland houses a collection of over 1,000 artifacts and murals representing African American life in rural Howard County in the early 1900s and memorabilia depicting images of African Americans over the last 200 years.

The museum’s collection includes:

■An art gallery displaying local African American artists

■An exhibit of replicas representing the inventions of African Americans... See More

■A music collection of vintage and contemporary recordings

■An exhibit highlighting African American leaders and families of Howard County

■An exhibit of images of African Americans on stamps and first day covers

■A pictorial mural of pre and post inaugural images of our 44th President, Barack Obama

■Audio visual collection of historical, temporary researched and related items

■An exhibit highlighting African Americans serving in the military along with related artifacts

■A collection of African American memorabilia depicting negative stereotypes


Children’s Library

The Children’s Library collection consists of over 200 books, objects and periodicals by and about African Americans.
