DC Listening Lounge Presents Sound Scene 2011!
Natural Selections: "Notorious Radio Surfer"

Saturday, July 30, 2011
Location: The Goethe Institut, Washington, DC
8:00pm-11:30pm


"Notorious Radio Surfer" aka Denee Barr shows her natural inclination for selectively scanning the radio dial while in the car back dropped against a video and a recorded music session/interview about the relevance of radio with musician friends Robert O'Brien and Charles Crawford.

(To Be Decided at a Later Date): This collaborative audio performance art piece concludes with a live improv music jam session joined by jazz phenom guitarist Jerry Gordon.

The DC Listening Lounge has explored sound and storytelling for more than five years in Washington, DC . Its members meet monthly in a rather informal setting: someone's living room. With a plate of food in hand and a beverage, they sit and listen to each other's work. Sometimes the pieces are highly produced, others are works in progress. The Lounge encourages experimentation and motivates audio enthusiasts to become producers.

Denee Barr

Washington, DC Native Denee Barr is an artistic chameleon skilled in multi-media art, photography, video, music, and singing. Denee has won numerous awards for her visionary artwork and performance talents, awarded a 2003 Maryland State Art Council Individual Artist Award Grant for Artist Excellence in Photography, and Denee is the First Place Winner of the International Vocal Solo Competition at Howard University 1979. Denee studied engineering, radio, television, film, and video at the University of Maryland College Park and she is known for her multilayered portfolios and diverse perspective.



John Asante


John Asante is a radio producer in D.C. on Talk of the Nation, NPR's live, call-in talk show. When he's not booking guests, writing scripts, and screening calls like a mad man, he enjoys playing soccer and softball, making mixtapes, and wearing all things plaid or gingham. He comes to D.C. by way of Atlanta (and New Jersey, although he won't readily admit it).



Robert O’Brien


I play both acoustic and electric violin in various genres -- classical, jazz, ambient, new age etc. I completed my Master Degree in Violin Performance at the University of Maryland on a fellowship studying with the Guarneri String Quartet. I completed my undergraduate work in violin performance at the Peabody Institute. I have played with the Borghese String Quartet, the Columbia Orchestra, the Annapolis Symphony and the Fairfax Symphony. I also have performed at numerous special events playing either the electric violin or the acoustic violin.



Jerry Gordon


Jazz guitarist Jerry Gordon is Baltimore/Washington, DC area treasure. His bashful demeanor is eclipsed by his overwhelming talent and his style is clearly that of Wes Montgomery or George Benson, but give Jerry a closer listen and you will hear an elegance that can only be developed over many decades of honing. Jerry Gordon jazz is classy and superb.



Charles Crawford

Charles Crawford is a multi-talented performer who plays the guitar, saxophone, bass, violin, and more. A visionary musician, Charles is a genius at improvisation with an intuitive sense of creativity. Based in Washington, DC Charles Crawford has played with many jazz greats, Marsalis and Najee to name just a few.

On Thursday, June 16th 2011, the Howard County Arts Council hosted its third annual Open Mic Night in the black box theatre at the Howard County Center for the Arts beginning at 6:30 pm. Open Mic Night was held in conjunction with the free exhibit reception for the Resident Visual Artists 2011 and Coded exhibits + the Columbia Festival of the Arts! Reed Miller discusses The Threads of Time, the Fabric of History: 38 Profiles of African American Designers and Dressmakers from 1850- present, particularly fascinating and little known facts about designers such as Ann Lowe, who was responsible for Jackie Kennedy's wedding dress; Elizabeth Keckley, creator of Mary Todd Lincoln's event wardrobe; and Zelda Wynn, who worked on the Dance Theatre of Harlem's costumes. Misako Ballet Company presented Free Studio Concert and Japan Relief Fundraiser on Saturday, April 16th from 1:00-1:30pm in Columbia, Maryland. The concert featured a mix of Japanese themed, contemporary and classical dance. At the end of the concert, children from the audience joined the performers on stage and learned a short dance and made origami cranes.

The audience had the opportunity to make origami cranes which will be sent to the Bezos Family Foundation. They will donate $2 for each crane received to Architecture for Humanity's reconstruction efforts in Japan. The Columbia Art Center Galleries Present...

BLOSSOMS FOR CLAUDIA: A Juried Theme Art Exhibition 2011

The Columbia Association Art Center Galleries and Howard County Tourism & Promotion’s Blossoms of Hope present BLOSSOMS FOR CLAUDIA, a juried theme art exhibition that runs April 14-May 1, 2011. The exhibition honors and celebrates the courageous journey of those coping with cancer and features more than 50 artists whose works are inspired by or reflect the theme of cupcake.

The show’s goal is to raise awareness about the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center which provides resources to people diagnosed with cancer and helps them navigate through the decisions they face during their treatments. A reception and awards ceremony was held Friday, April 15, 6-8pm in Columbia Art Center Galleries. Free of charge and open to the community.

The exhibition, which showcases the strong talents of the local visual arts community, include paintings, collages, ceramics, photographs, fiber works, jewelry, mixed media, sculptures, glass, and more!

My unique, mixed media photograph House and Road, Worcestershire, Teme Valley, England sold last night at the Celebration of the Arts in Howard County Gala. Lot's of money raised in support of arts and culture. In over 15 years, the Howard County Arts Council has raised and invested close to 1 Million Dollars in creative sustainability and vitality in Howard County, Maryland and beyond.
