Medium: photo emulsion on and gouache on Arches Paper 22" x 28"



St. Vincent and the Grenadines are an exquisite cluster of islands located in the Eastern Caribbean between Barbados and Grenada. The main island of St. Vincent is volcanic with black sand beaches and a fertile rich interior known as the Marriqua Valley where the country's bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables are grown. White sand beaches and turquoise blue waters rim the smaller Grenadine Islands. I discovered these islands back in the late 1980's while doing research in the Howard County Library in Columbia, Maryland and looking through the American Folklife Center Library of Congress research materials on the Caribbean. I was drawn to articles on the African, Carib, and Arawak history. The simplicity in lifestyle and the wooden boat building also appealed to me. The photographs in this exhibit represent daily life in the Caribbean as I experienced during my travels from 1989-1992.

Denee Barr Photographic on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 in Washington, DC where historian Charles L. Blockson donated about 40 objects from Harriett Tubman's life to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. The museum is slated to open near the Washington Monument in 2015. Blockson, 76, is a prominent collector of black history. The Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple University in Philadelphia started with a donation of 20,000 items in 1984 and has grown to more than 200,000 items including slave narratives, art and rare texts.

Harriet Tubman's favorite hymnal from 1876 and a silk shawl given to Ms. Tubman by Queen Victoria of England are among some of the artifacts donated by Charles L. Blockson to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

For two years photographer Bonnie Schupp challenged people to answer the question, "How do you define yourself?" The answer had to be just one sentence beginning with the words, "I am." Answers were followed by defining portrait photos. Bonnie received nearly 100 responses from people ages 4-100 representing more than a dozen countries.



Tonight I am at the closing reception and artist talk by photographer Bonnie Schupp for the "Defining Ourselves" exhibit at the Light Gallery 1015 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21201 from 5-9pm. My portrait is in this exhibit along with a quote and I sing at 8pm for tonight's event before Bonnie gives her talk. Go to website for details about this exhibit www.atthelight.org
